American bass-baritone, David Pittsinger, is renowned as a stage performer of the greatest distinction for his dramatic portrayals on the world’s major opera and concert stages and on Broadway.

A favorite at the Met, he has sung over 100 performances in 16 productions, appearing in 6 Live HD Broadcasts, including the inaugural Julie Taymor The Magic Flute, and in I Puritani this past season.  A New York Times article featuring Pittsinger, noted that “he is the only artist known to have sung a leading role at the Met [Hamlet] and on Broadway’s Lincoln Center Theater [South Pacific] in the same day.”

A champion of new works, Pittsinger created the role of Roy Disney in the world premiere of Phillip Glass’ The Perfect American for Teatro Real Madrid, Robert E Lee in Glass’ Appomattox for Washington National Opera at The Kennedy Center, and the role of Eugene O’Neill in the world premiere of Jeanine Tesori and Toni Kushner’s A Blizzard On Marblehead Neck. Concert highlights include appearing as the bass soloist in the first staged performances of Verdi’s Requiem with the English Nat’l Opera, and with the Vienna Philharmonic for Frank Martin’s Golgotha at the Musikverein.  He has appeared at all the major international festivals, most notably in Salzburg, Pesaro, Aix en Provence, Casals, Tanglewood, and Santa Fe.

 Pittsinger has also appeared in Broadway revival productions as Sweeney Todd, Cervantes/Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha, King Arthur in Camelot, Fred Graham in Kiss Me Kate, El Gallo in The Fantasticks , Captain Von Trapp in The Sound of Music and Emile de Becque in South Pacific, lauded by The Washington Times as “perhaps the definitive interpretation of this role in our time,” earning him a Helen Hayes Award nomination for best leading actor in a musical. Pittsinger is also a 4-time nominee for the Connecticut Critics Circle Award.

His extensive discography covers a rich spectrum of repertoire, including Arlington Sons (Apple Music), Ives Songs (Naxos), Rodger’s and Hammerstein at the Movies (EMI), The Perfect American (Opus Arte), Grammy -award winning Susannah (Virgin Classics), La Callisto  (Harmonia Mundi), The Bells and Oedipus Rex (Houston Symphony), Simon Boccanegra (Ricercar), Faure Requiem (STR), and Florencia en el Amazonas (HGO).
 
Recent highlights include his appearance as King Rene in Iolanta for Yale Opera and performances in I Puritani at the Met. Looking ahead, Pittsinger will take on the iconic role of Scarpia in Tosca for Opera Theater of Connecticut and will originate the role of Reverend John Maclean in the world premiere of A River Runs Through It at Opera Montana.
